【第1回】

1-1.
 It is not necessary to do well in everything. There are practically no people who can do that, except, maybe, a superman. On the other hand, don’t say you’re hopeless, or there’s no use in trying. Nobody is perfect; but nobody is hopeless, either.

全てにおいて上手くやる必要は無い。おそらく超人を除けば、ほぼ誰もそんなことは出来ない。一方で、自分は絶望的だとか、あるいは、努力しても無駄だなどと思わないでいただきたい。完璧な人なんていないのだが、しかし、絶望的な人もまた、いないのである。


1-2.
 In Britain tea is the drink that cheers ─ and that is cheap. But there’s a darker side to the ‘nice cup of tea.’ Life is far from cheerful for many of those who produce tea in other parts of the world.

イギリスでは、お茶は元気になる飲み物だ。そして、安い。しかし、「小洒落たお茶の一杯」には暗い側面がある。世界の他の地域でお茶を生産する人々の多くにとって、生活は元気いっぱいとはほど遠い。


1-3.
 Artists of the best quality usually last longer and give you better service than those that are cheap and inferior, so that in the long run they prove cheaper. It does not, however, necessarily follow that the dearest is the best, since some dear things are overpriced.

最高級の芸術家は通常、安価で劣った芸術家よりも息が長くより優れたサービスを提供し、その結果、長い目で見ればより安くつくということが判明する。しかしながらいくつかの貴重なものは値段が高くつけられ過ぎているので、最も貴重なものが最高であるということには必ずしもならない。

 In 1960, a Belgian scientist and an American naval officer were exploring in a deep-sea vessel. They took it to a depth of more than 6 miles in the western Pacific. At no time were they out of sight of one or more kinds of life.

2-1.
 Should you make your bed badly, you will probably have an uncomfortable night, for which you will have only yourself to blame. In much the same way, all of us are responsible for the consequence of our actions.

あなたがベッドメイキングをおろそかにしたら、おそらくあなたは快適でない夜を過ごすことになり、そしてそのことにつき、あなたが責められるのはあなた自身だけだろう。それとほぼ同じように、私たちは皆、自らの行動の結果に対して責任がある。


2-2.
 After a few weeks’ trial he was shifted to another department, because he was not up to the work that had been given to him.

2-3.
 Just before I reached the bridge the sky darkened again, which I paid no heed to since I knew dusk was falling; but no sooner had I stepped onto the bridge than the skies opened and the rain began to fall in torrents.

 It is to be regretted that the majority of young people should look upon an effortless life as the highest good.

3-1.
 On approaching them, he found they were about to kill a member of their tribe, and in order to scare them away, he fired his gun at them.

彼らに近づいていくと、彼らが自分らの部族の一員をまさに殺そうとしているところだと彼は気がついた。そして、彼らを脅して追い払うために、彼らに狙いを定め、彼は発砲した。


3-2.
 Last year a record number of Japanese people spent their holidays abroad. This year is almost bound to break that record, and next year will almost certainly break that one, as well. Perhaps there will come a time when everybody goes abroad at least once a year.

昨年、記録的な数の日本人が休日を外国で過ごした。今年、ほぼ間違いなくその記録を更新することになる。そして、来年も同様に、ほぼ確実にその記録をも更新するだろう。おそらく、全員が最低でも一年に一回は外国に行くような時代が来るであろう。


3-3.
 Chemicals remain in the bodies of animals and hurt their nervous systems. Besides, they prevent the forming of calcium in birds, which then lay eggs with very thin shells or no shell at all. When wild birds and animals fail to reproduce, it isn’t very long before they disappear.

3-4.
 Most of our actions perform themselves, as it were, without our help. If it is your custom to lock up at night and put out the lights, you do so quite mechanically, and if, having locked the sitting room door and reached the foot of the stairs, your mind chances to wake up and inquire; “Now, did you put the lights out?” and sends you back to make sure, you never fail to find that the action has performed itself without any conscious effort on your part.

4-1.
 Living half the year in Japan and half the United States, I am always being asked, and I am always asking myself, what the chief differences are between life on the two sides of the Pacific.

半年を日本、もう半年をアメリカで過ごしながら、太平洋の両側のふたつの生活の間の主な差異は何であるのかということを、私はいつも尋ねられ続け、そして自分自身にも尋ねてきた。

 

4-2.
 When the public cannot understand a picture, they conclude that it is a bad picture. Consequently the best painters are or at least were left to starve in garrets.

ある絵を大衆が理解できないとき、彼らはその絵を悪い絵だと結論づける。従って、最高の画家たちは、今も屋根裏部屋で餓死するがままにされている。もしくは少なくとも、かつてはそうであった。


4-3.
 In most other parts of the world, people aren’t as free to move around as in America. In some, they aren’t because their leaders won’t let them. In others, they aren’t because traditions and religion make it too difficult for them. In many more, their poverty makes it impossible.

アメリカをのぞいて、世界のほとんどの地域では、人々はアメリカ内でのように自由には移動できない。というのも、いくつかの地域においては、政治的指導者がそこの人々に移動をさせないからである。他の地域においては、伝統や宗教が、人々が移動することをあまりに難しくしているからである。さらに多くの地域では、人々の貧困が彼らの移動を不可能にしているからである。


4-4.
 Most grains are too expensive to be fed to animals. There are two main reasons why farmers in the United States are able to use corn in this way. One is that corn grows so well. The other reason is that farmers have worked out high-yield methods.

ほとんどの穀物は、動物に与えてしまうには、高価すぎる。しかし、アメリカの農家がトウモロコシをこのように餌としての用途で使うことができているのには、二つの主な理由がある。一つには、トウモロコシが本当によく育つからである。もう一つには、それらの農家が収穫効率のよい方法を考案したからである。

5-1.
 Young children need to play with simple toys. Department stores offer many complex and expensive playthings, but parents of very young children complain that these toys are an extravagance at best and harmful to a child’s development at worst. Blocks and simple things like dishes and empty boxes can be not only cheaper and more fun to play with, but also more educational.

幼い子供は単純なおもちゃで遊ぶ必要がある。デパートは、しばしば複雑で高価なおもちゃを提供しているが、ごく幼い子供の親たちは、それらのおもちゃは良くて贅沢品、悪くて子供の発育に有害だ、と不平を言う。積み木、お皿や空箱のようなシンプルなものは、より安くて、遊んで楽しいだけでなく、より教育的でもある。


5-2.
 The book is printed only because its author cannot speak to thousands of people at once; if he could, he would. You cannot talk to your friends in India; if you could, you would; you write instead.

本が印刷されるのはひとえに、その本の著者が一度に何千人もの人々に向かって話すことができないからである。というのも、もしそんなことができるなら、そうするだろうに。あなたはインドの友達に話しかけることもできない。もしそんなことができるならそうするだろう。だから、その代わりに手紙を書くのだ。


5-3.
 An Englishman will not usually speak to a stranger on a train except perhaps in the dining-car and then only after he has been spoken to. The same is true of the Japanese. But once approached the Japanese are as friendly as any people in the world.

イギリス人というのは、食堂車の中にいる時、それから、話しかけられた後のみを除いて、普通は見知らぬ人に話しかけたりしないものだ。同じことは日本人にも当てはまる。しかし、ひとたびお近づきになってしまえば、日本人は世界のどんな民族にも劣らず、友好的なのである。


5-4.
 Mrs. Miyajima called a doctor. His name was Dr. Hayano. He came to my room and said in perfect English, “What is the matter? Where does it hurt?” I was so relieved to hear a kind voice speaking English that I burst into tears.

宮島さんは医者を呼んだ。彼の名は、早野医師といった。彼は私の部屋に来て、完璧な英語でこう言った。「どうしたのですか。どこが痛みますか。」私は英語を話す優しい声を聞いてとても安心し、泣き出してしまった。

6-1.
 Each guide carried a yellow flag in one hand so that the people would not get lost into the huge crowds, and a loud-speaker in the other hand to explain the many sights to them.

どのガイドも、片方の手には、ひどい人混みの中でも人々が道に迷わないように、黄色い旗を持っており、もう片方の手には、多くの観光地を人々に説明するために、拡声器を持っていた。

 

6-2.
 A computerized memory enabled the word processor to perform a wide variety of tasks with greater flexibility and speeds than traditional methods.

【和訳例】
電子化されたメモリーのおかげで、ワープロは、幅広く多様な仕事を、伝統的な方法よりもより柔軟に、より速くこなすことができるようになった。

 

6-3.
 The job that the young man finally takes may not have a direct relationship to what he has previously studied. Even a graduate of the law department of a university will probably not become a lawyer, and his job may only incidentally require knowledge of law. Or, he may have spent four years perfecting his French, only to take a job which gives him absolutely no opportunity to use the language.

若者が最終的に就く仕事は、その若者がそれまでに学んできたことと直接的な関係がないかもしれない。大学の法学部の卒業生でさえ、ひょっとすると弁護士にならないだろうし、その人の仕事は、ただ付随的にしか、法律の知識を必要とはしないかもしれない。また、ある若者がフランス語の完全なる習得のために4年を費やしたのに、その結果ほとんどその言語を使う機会を与えないような仕事につく、ということもありえる。


6-4.
 The youth who expects to get on in the world must make up his mind that, come what may, he will succeed.

出世を期待する若者は、何があろうと自分は成功すると心を決めなければならない。

 


【第7回】

7-1.
 Boys are more likely to get into fights than girls. Whether you believe in women’s liberation or not, you can’t get around that fact.

【和訳例】
男子は女子よりも喧嘩っぱやい。あなたが女性の解放を信じようが信じまいが、あなたはこの事実を認めざるを得ない。


7-2.
 Not long ago, I had a chance to watch a surgeon perform a delicate brain operation. A slight slip of his hand would have meant instant death for the patient. What impressed me about the doctor was not his skill but his amazing calmness.

【和訳例】
そう遠くない昔、私は脳外科医が繊細な脳の手術をするのを見る機会があった。彼の手がほんの少しでも滑れば、それは患者にとって、即死を意味しただろう。その医者に関して最も私の印象に残ったのは、彼の技術ではなく、彼の驚くべき冷静さだった。


7-3.
 Water, soil, and the earth’s green mantle of plants make up the world. Although modern man seldom remembers the fact, he could not exist without the plants that use the sun’s energy and manufacture the basic foodstuff.

水、土、そして地球の植物からなる緑の層が、この世界を作り上げている。現代人はめったにその事実を思い返さないけれども、人間は、太陽エネルギーを使って基本的な食糧を精算している植物たちがいなければ、生存できないないだろう。


7-4.
 Scientists have had to look for reasons for the dinosaurs’ downfall. They have found many possible answers. One is that around the time of the dinosaurs’ death, many new flowering plants evolved. Their blossoms may have poisoned the animals that ate them. Secondly, Earth’s climate may have warmed slightly, or it may have cooled. Either change would have damaged the dinosaurs’ eggs, allowing fewer young to be born.

科学者はこれまで、恐竜が滅びた理由を探さなければならなかった。科学者は、多くのありうる答えを考案してきた。第一の説は、恐竜の死の時代のあたりで、花を咲かす新しい植物が数多く進化してきた、というものだ。つまり、その植物の花が、それを食べた動物たちを毒したのかもしれない、というのである。第二の説は、地球の気候がほんの少しだけ暖かくなった、もしくは涼しくなったのかもしれない、というものだ。寒暖のどちらの場合の変化でも、そのような変化は恐竜の卵にダメージを与え、より少ない頭数しか恐竜の若い世代を誕生させなかったのだろう、というのである。

 


【第8回】

8-1.
 The human race is the only one that knows it must die, and it knows this only through its experience. A child brought up alone and transported to a desert island would have no more idea of death than a cat or a plant.

【和訳例】
人類は自らが死なざるを得ないことを知っている唯一の種で、そして人類は経験を通してのみ、そのことを知っている。たったひとりで育てられて、人がいない島に送られた子供なら、猫や植物と同様に死の概念を持たないだろう。


8-2.
 This sudden increase in the population of the developing countries has come at a difficult time. Even if their population had not grown so fast they would have been facing a desperate struggle to bring up the standard of living of their people.


【和訳例】
この発展途上国での急激な人口増加は、困難な時代に起きた。たとえそれらの発展途上国の人口が、これほど急激に増加しなかったとしても、それらの国々は自国民の生活水準を引き上げるための、死にものぐるいの苦闘に直面していたであろう。


8-3.
 At school, we do not have much freedom of choice, and can’t refuse to study math or science even if these are our weak subjects. It is a very useful experience, however, as it gives us the opportunity to test ourselves.

学校では、私達に多くの選択の自由はなく、もし数学や理科が自分たちの苦手な教科であったとしても、それらを勉強することを拒むことが私たちにはできない。しかしながら、そのことは私たちに自分の向き不向きを試す機会を与えるので、とても有益な経験なのだ。


8-4.
 It does not matter to a great actor what part he plays, whether it is that of a king or a beggar.
